Gadget includes computer programmes which provide a variety of services and do not require launching a separate application when they are operating within an environment of multiple gadgets. This idea is implemented as part of existing software development techniques such as JavaScript, Forming elements, etc. These are proprietary formats such as; Google Desktop, Google Gadgets, Microsoft Gadgets, the AmigaOS Workbench and Apple Widgets among others.

The word gadget first got documented references in software engineering on some of its instances of usage within AmigaOS that was initially developed since 1985 for its Amiga computer systems (intuition.library and then gadtools.library among others). Widget stands for an entity named after a technological tradition of GUI widget in Graphical User Interface with certain characteristics.
